Supermarket Price Wars Killing Off The Booze Cruise

The traditional British booze cruise, is slowly being killed off by supermarket chains who are aggressively competing with one another in an ongoing price war.
According to research from industry portal The Grocer, a slumping Pound-Euro exchange rate, and cut price deals from supermarkets has meant that consumers no longer have the incentive they once did to cross the English Channel and stock up on cut price booze, since alcohol is now cheaper at the local supermarket.
British supermarket chains are offering alcohol so competitively priced, that alcohol warehouses on the Calais coast no longer offer the value they once did.
Everything from John Smith Extra Smooth to Smirnoff and Bombay Sapphire is cheaper at UK supermarket then at the Calais branches of the chains. Carlsberg, Fosters and Smirnoff are only marginally more expensive, and when added to the cost of travel, the price difference is negligible and not worthwhile.
A Sainsbury’s spokeswoman said: “We have great value promotions on a number of lines in UK stores so there will be occasions when UK store prices are cheaper than those across the Channel.”
The spokesperson noted that middle class consumers were still making the trip to purchase wine and Champagne, since prices for those products continue to be lower across the border.
Earlier in the year Majestic Wine said it had seen a large fall in trade, with the number of transactions dropping 27 per cent and the average customer spend declining 7 per cent.
Commenting on the findings, a spokesman for The Grocer magazine said: “While the plummeting pound was blamed, it is the depth of below-cost supermarket promotions that have really scuppered the viability of the booze cruise.”
“Factor in the ferry, petrol and time and it becomes clear trips to France just to cram alcohol into every nook and cranny of the car are doomed.”

Asda’s New Slogan Remarkably Similar To Old Sainsbury’s Marketing Campaign
UK supermarket chain Asda has borrowed a slogan previously used by rival Sainsbury’s for its new advertising campaign as it seeks to attract upmarket clientèle to its stores in the build up to Christmas.
The catchphrase “Good food costs less at Asda” began appearing in full page newspaper advertisements last Sunday, and is very similar to the ‘Good food costs less at Sainsbury’s campaign Sainsbury’s ran for nearly 30 years between 1959 and 1991.
Asda says it is using the slogan to help promote is Extra Special premium food product range, and says it is doing so because the phrase reflects the value and quality of its groceries.
Asda watchers say that this is the first time during the recession that the retailer is emphasising the quality of its good as opposed to its “everyday low prices” message it normally runs with. Many see it as an effort by the supermarket to win customers over from upmarket rivals.
Sainsbury’s says that despite the similarity between the two slogans, it did not intend to pursue the matter.
A spokesman for the retailer said: “Good food costs less at Sainsbury’s’ is a registered trademark but we don’t own the sentence ‘good food costs less. There has been no trademark infringement and we are flattered that Asda has chosen to follow in our footsteps.”

The UK’s leading retailer Tesco has been forced to withdraw a Christmas card from two of its stores in York following complaints the card pokes fun a ginger haired children.
The card depicts a kid with ginger hair sitting on Santa’s lap with the caption “Santa loves all kids. Even ginger ones.”
The BBC quoted a customer Ms. Davinia Phillips with three ginger haired daughters as saying she found the greeting card offensive.
Tesco said it was sorry if the card had “caused any upset”.
The shopper told the BBC that she saw the card when shopping at her local Tesco store
Ms Phillips said:”I picked it up and I couldn’t believe it. I just thought ‘What is so funny about that?’ I didn’t really get the joke. I thought I would buy it, because I wanted proof that I had seen it.”
Ms Phillips, who herself is naturally ginger, added: “The more I thought about it, the more annoyed I got and I told the lady who worked in the store I was not happy.”
The card had been removed from sale by the time Ms Phillips returned to the store that same evening. The card has also been withdrawn from Tesco’s Clifton Moor branch in York, after Ms Phillips sister-in law complained.
A Tesco spokesman said: “We sell a large range of Christmas cards, including some which are intended to be humorous. It is never our intention to offend any customer and we are sorry if this card caused any upset.”
The spokesman added that the retailer was still considering whether to cease making the card available from other Tesco outlets
Card manufacturer, Essex-based Quitting Hollywood, said it had no comment to make.

Asda’s Ridiculously Low Priced Salmon Is No Fishy Business

Asda’s latest unbelievable offer to lure Christmas shoppers into its stores this December is no fishy business with the retailer offer an entire Alaskan pink salmon for the remarkably low price of just £3.
The supermarket chain says it has been able to reduce prices to that level from the original £7 price by cutting shipping costs.
A 1.2 Kilo fish is enough to feed a family of eight and would mean that each member of the family is fed for the ridiculously low cost of just 39p a person.
The unbelievably low prices is even more astounding when you compare the cost of salmon with that of other retailers.
M&S and Selfridges both sell whole salmon for around £20.
Asda rivals Sainsbury’s and Tesco have yet to be able to match Asda’s low price for an equivalent product.
An Asda spokesman told The Daily Mail: “It is the lowest-priced salmon on the market. It is sustainably sourced from Alaska where the fish are caught in the wild and frozen immediately to ensure the best quality and flavour.”
The frozen salmon is available in store on the end of a row near the party food. However a selection salmon can be ordered online from Asda.
