Tesco Doubles Polish Food Product Range
UK retailer Tesco has doubled its Polish food product range from 119 products to 211, as the supermarket responds to increasing demand. The increase in product range marks the first rise in sales since the products were first stocked in September 2006.
A probable influx of Polish immigrants into the UK has resulted in Polish food sales rising by 15 per cent from a year earlier. The supermarket giant had initially cut back on its Polish product range, after witnessing a 23 per cent annual decline in demand.

Sainsbury’s To Establish Home Energy Centres For Sales Of Energy Efficient Products
UK retailer Sainsbury’s is set to become the first supermarket chain to offer its shoppers the chance to buy renewable energy products.
Sainsbury’s in a joint effort with energy company EDF Energy says it plans to open three new concessions known as Home Energy Centres (HEC’s) at its retail outlets in Kidderminster, Leicester and Camberley.
The Home Energy Centres will behave as showrooms, and provide shoppers with information and advice, as well as a number of energy saving and renewable energy products such as solar panels, insulation and air source heat pumps.
Customers visiting an HEC will also have the ability to sign up for a new electricity or has deal, and staff members will help customers to apply for government subsidies to fund making energy efficient improvements to their homes.
The retailer says the centres have been established to act as a complement to its national sales line, where consumers nationally can order products from the retailer, and have them delivered and installed by an EDF Energy professional.
Sainsbury’s commercial manager Adam Zeiderman said: “There are lots of people who want to invest in renewable energy products but they don’t know how or where to start. We use some of these products in many of our stores, and now we’re making it easier for people to use them in their own homes.”

Fairtrade Fortnight 22nd February To March 7th
Fairtrade product sales in Britain increased by 12 per cent during 2008, and British shoppers have continued to remain loyal to ethically produced products, with sales valued at £799 million. According to the Fairtrade Foundation. .
The slowly recovering economy helped sales momentum during 2009, and improved business sentiments helped boost sales growth.
To coincide with the start of Fairtrade fortnight which began on Monday the 22nd of February and runs until the 7th of March, the Fairtrade Foundation revealed data which suggests that both manufacturers and consumers are switching to Fairtrade ingredients and products.
Over 4,500 items have now been licensed to carry the Fairtrade mark, and theme of this year’s event is “the Big Swap” and the aim of the fortnight is to persuade more shoppers to swap regular items such as tea, coffee and sugar, for Fairtrade alternatives
Harriet Lamb, chief executive of the Fairtrade Foundation, said that despite the recession, British and Irish consumers are still “voting with their wallets for fairness and want to change the indignities of an unjust trading system”.
Lamb added: “These challenging times have been a wake-up call and forward-thinking companies have also been re-evaluating their priorities, seeing sustainability as the way forward for business, building relations with producers and introducing many Fairtrade products in the past year.”

Tesco Extends Double Points Rewards For Clubcard Members
Tesco says it will extend its double point’s scheme until the end of summer, allowing Tesco Clubcard members to continue earning double points from all in store and online purchases.
Tesco’s advertising campaign uses the catch phrase “Double points extended until summer 2010.” And the retailer says it may even continue the promotion beyond the end of summer.
A Tesco spokesperson says the retailer was still considering how long it will run the promotion and so far has not announced the specific end date for the scheme.
“The reason we are running the current adverts is that, from research, customers saw this as a temporary scheme so we want to assure them it will run for at least a few months longer.” the spokes-person said.
Last August Tesco introduced double bonus points under which members of the Clubcard scheme earned two reward points for every £1 spent instead of the single point they usually receive for the same spend. Points can also be exchanged for Tesco Reward tokens.
Last week Tesco celebrated the 15th anniversary of its loyalty scheme by announcing that more than 14 million UK customers have received £120 million worth of rewards.
