Asda Forced To Apologise For Discount Mistake

June 21, 2010 · Filed Under ASDA, Online Shopping, Shopping News · Comment

UK retailer Asda was forced to apologise to its customers last week, after the supermarket mistakenly offered online shoppers a whopping £75 discount on their bills.

Last Saturday, a computer malfunction on the retailer’s online shopping system resulted in all first time shoppers being allowed to take advantage of the large discount.
The retailer spotted the mistake within two hours, but by that point, some shoppers had already made use of the discount and placed orders.

Customers were later informed of the error, and were told that either they paid the full cost for their shopping when it arrived, or they would have to cancel their order, and would be required to return the items ordered back to the store.

According to an Asda spokesperson, only a very small number of shoppers had been affected by the mistake.

“It goes without saying that we are sorry,” she said. “We’re bending over backwards to recompense the small number of shoppers who wrongly got the discount voucher . We’ll give them a free delivery and a discount off their next asda.com shopping .”

Asda Begins Selling Cancer Medication On Non Profit Basis

June 9, 2010 · Filed Under Pharmacy, Shopping News · Comment

UK retailing giant Asda has started selling drugs used for the treatment of cancer on a not for profit basis, as it seeks to make treatment of cancer more affordable and accessible.

The retailer announced a couple of weeks ago that it would end the practice of marking up prices on all privately prescribed cancer drugs, beginning immediately and called on its rivals to follow suit.

The drug Iressa which is used in the treatment of lung cancer is now available for lower prices at Asda than any other UK pharmacy.

Cancer treatment is not cheap, and even at a price which has not been marked up Iressa still costs £2,167 for a pack of 30 at Asda, which is far cheaper than the £2,601 charged at Lloyds Pharmacy, the £3,251 at Boots and £3,253 at Superdrug.

Asda says that UK pharmacies have marked up the price of privately prescribed cancer medication by as much as 76 per cent over cost price. The retailer says that almost two thirds of people who require medication and are privately prescribed treatment, are unaware that the cost of prescription varies between pharmacies, and as a result fail to compare prices.

Earlier in the year Asda began the practice of selling In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) drugs on a not for profit basis. Asda says its move has helped couples save as much as £820 per IVF cycle compared with other high street pharmacies.

Asda Knocks Down Price Of England World Cup Strip By 50 Per Cent

June 8, 2010 · Filed Under Clothing, Discount Offers, George, Online Shopping, Shopping News · Comment

UK supermarket chain Asda, the official merchandiser for the FIFA world cup in the UK has gotten into the spirit of arguably the world’s biggest sporting event, and is now offering England football shirts for a fifty per cent discount off the recommended retail price.

The replica Three Lions tops are being sold by Asda for just £25 each in store and online, and the chain is calling for other retailers to reduce their prices.

Asda purchased an additional 48,000 England football shirts(36,700 of the home shirt and 11,300 of the away red strip) on the grey market, after shirt manufacturer Umbro refused its request for more shirts.

Asda said: “It’s taken us over three months to secure the shirts after Umbro refused to supply to us. We’ve sourced them on the grey market from two distributors who’ve travelled to France, Spain and Germany to get us the product. We started off with a much smaller number but have fought hard over the last few weeks to get even more from all over the show.”

Andrew Moore, head of George at Asda, said that it was time the supermarket “blew the whistle on rip-off merchandise”.

He added: “The World Cup will be the biggest sporting event of the year and we wouldn’t want fans to miss out on having a piece of history because it was too expensive.”

“We’ve really gone into extra time in order to get our hands on the official shirt so we can offer it to our customers for a fantastic price.”

The 2010 FIFA World Cup kicks off in Johannesburg, South Africa, on June 11.
