Tesco To Bid For Carrefour South East Asian Stores

September 9, 2010 · Filed Under Shopping News, Tesco · Comment

The UK’s largest retailer Tesco has entered the bidding war for the South East Asian stores of French Supermarket giant Carrefour.

Tesco joins a list of nine other bidders in the auctioning of Carrefour’s 61 stores in South East Asia, which span Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia.

The sale is expected to generate at least £650 million for the French retail giant.

Tesco already has a significant presence in the South East Asian markets, and is keen on expanding and adding scale to its operation in the region, which the retail says presents a “significant long-term growth opportunity”.

Tesco currently operates 663 retail outlets in Thailand and a further 32 in Malaysia and is seeking to expand its Malaysian business by 27 per cent in the next financial year.

Many analysts expect that because of Tesco’s aggressive expansion plans, it will likely usurp Carrefour’s position as the world’s second largest retailer by 2012. Perennial number one Wal-Mart is likely to maintain its position as the largest retailer on the planet.

Despite putting its south-east Asian hypermarkets up for sale, Carrefour said it will remain highly active in China, where it has a large presence, and will continue to operate stores in Indonesia and Taiwan.

UK Shoppers Use Of Plastic Carrier Bags Falls By Half

September 3, 2010 · Filed Under Shopping News · Comment

Shoppers at the UK’s largest supermarket chains have cut their use of plastic carrier bags by nearly half compared to the numbers that were used four years ago according to the Waste &Resources Action Programme (Wrap).

Data released by the program suggests that the number of plastic carrier bags used by supermarket customers has fallen by as much as 43 per cent during the last 4 years. 10.6 billion bags were used in 2006, compared with 6.1 billion in 2009/10.

The data also suggests that the quantity of material used to manufacture the bags has also fallen by more than half during the same period.

The BRC said: “This is a tremendous achievement by supermarkets and customers to reduce environmental impact.”

Stephen Robertson, the BRC’s director general, said the latest figures show that shoppers are “permanently adopting the habit of re-using their bags “.

He added: “Retailers are working hard on a range of other environmental measures, such as reducing food waste, reducing and redesigning packaging, as well as providing customers with recycling information through the on-pack recycling label.”

Asda Cuts Price Of Fuel Yet Again

September 2, 2010 · Filed Under ASDA, Shopping News · Comment

Firing another salvo in the fuel price war, retailing major Asda has once again cut the cost of unleaded petrol and diesel by one pence per litre.

Asda cuts its price in time for the Bank Holiday weekend, and the new costs of filling up the tank at Asda is 110.9p a litre for unleaded, and 113.9p for diesel. Asda’s rivals have all pledged to match the cut in prices.

Asda’s latest cut comes just a week after it dropped the price of unleaded and diesel by 1p and 2p a litre respectively.

“When it comes to petrol pricing we keep it simple – we try to be the first to drop and the last to put them up, wherever you live,” said Phil Briggs, Asda’s Commercial Director.

“While others are happy to hold onto higher prices for longer, and even inflate them locally where they can get away with it – we believe the right thing to do is have consistently low prices every day, everywhere”.
