Asda Says It Will Create 7500 Jobs Next Year
The UK’s second biggest retail chain, Asda says it will create as many as 7,500 jobs in the UK in 2011. The supermarket chain says the new jobs will be created as a result of new store openings, expansion of its home shopping service, and the acquisition of Netto stores.
Home shopping will add 2,400 new employees, whilst the opening of new Asda outlets will require 3,500 new employees, and 1,500 new employees will be taken on at Netto supermarkets. One hundred staff will also be recruited at new in-store pharmacies .
“I’m proud to say next year we will once again create thousands of new jobs at every level of our growing business,” commented Asda chief executive Andy Clarke.
“At Asda we always recruit for attitude and train for skill, so you needn’t have previous retail experience to apply. We’re simply looking for people who share our passion for customer service .”
In May, the retailer acquired the Danish company Netto’s UK food stores for £778 million and says it intends to convert the outlets to the Asda brand in the first quarter of next year.

Asda Begins In Store Ordering Trial
UK supermarket chain Asda says it will begin a trial of an in-store ordering service that will allow customers to order non food products at three of its stores.
The service which is “Argos-style” enables customers to order items from kiosks which are in store, or from an online catalogue. The order will be completed by dispatching the goods to the checkout from an on-site warehouse.
Andy Clarke chief executive of Asda says the Asda Extra trials have stared at stores in Bradford, Glasshoughton in Castleford and Hyde, Greater Manchester.
In an interview with the Financial Times, he said: “Some stores can not trade the full general merchandise offer, but in some stores they have warehouse space that is not being used that we can turn over to this way of operating.”
Mr Clarke says that trial has already begun to show a positive response, and should they prove to ultimately be successful, in all likelihood the program may be rolled out to other Asda stores nationwide within the next five years.
