Asda Extends Price Guarantee To Electrical And Toys
UK retailer ASDA Grocery Onlineis extending its 10% price guarantee to non food lines such as ASDA Electricals UK, and toys, the supermarket chain has said.
Asda chief executive Andy Clarke, speaking at the annuals British Retail Conference in London said the move was simply a natural extension of the retailers price pledge, that guarantees shoppers that a fixed basket of grocery products at Asda stores will always be at least 10 per cent less expensive than the same basket of goods at rival stores. Failing which Asda has promised to refund the difference.
Asda claims that as many as three million shoppers now check prices because of its guarantee scheme, which it rolled out last year.
“We’ll look to keep extending the Asda price guarantee,” said Clarke. “To see what price you’re paying [compared to elsewhere] is going to become even more important for general merchandise.”
Mr. Clarke added that electronics, home wares and seasonal items such as toys “are market opportunities where mums this Christmas will be thinking really hard when they’re shopping for Santa.”

Asda Rolls Out Tech Trade In Scheme
UK supermarket chain ASDA has begun a new trade in service for gadgets which lets consumers swap old electronic items for cash.
Consumers can currently trade used mobile phones, MP3 players, sat navs and digital cameras for cash. Larger ticket items such as laptops and gaming consoles will be added to the service in July.
ASDA says its Tech Trade In scheme will be unbeatable on price, and rivals such as Mazuma mobile, Boots, Envirofone, Tesco and Sainsbury’s will not be able to compete.
The prices offered by any of these five Asda rivals will checked at the time the item being considered is added to the Asda site, and under the company’s promise, consumers who can prove that the price they received from Asda was not the highest within 24 hours, will be paid the difference.
Asda rolled out the new service after the retailer conducted research which suggested that in the UK, there are approximately 35 million unwanted and unused second hand mobile phones, 11 million digital cameras, 12 million gaming consoles, 9 million personal computers, and 5.5 million laptops.
Phil Stout, Asda’s electronics service manager, said: “We reckon the average UK home has hundreds of pounds worth of old gadgets that could be traded in for cash.”
“There are more mobile phones in the UK than people, for example, so there is a lot of cash out there waiting to be released.”
Stout added that goods traded in at Asda stores will either be recycled by specialist firms or repaired and resold to help the UK “become greener”.

Asda Begins In Store Ordering Trial
UK supermarket chain Asda says it will begin a trial of an in-store ordering service that will allow customers to order non food products at three of its stores.
The service which is “Argos-style” enables customers to order items from kiosks which are in store, or from an online catalogue. The order will be completed by dispatching the goods to the checkout from an on-site warehouse.
Andy Clarke chief executive of Asda says the Asda Extra trials have stared at stores in Bradford, Glasshoughton in Castleford and Hyde, Greater Manchester.
In an interview with the Financial Times, he said: “Some stores can not trade the full general merchandise offer, but in some stores they have warehouse space that is not being used that we can turn over to this way of operating.”
Mr Clarke says that trial has already begun to show a positive response, and should they prove to ultimately be successful, in all likelihood the program may be rolled out to other Asda stores nationwide within the next five years.

Tesco Launches iPhone App
UK Supermarket giant Tesco has launched an iPhone application which will let owners of the Apple device to carry out their grocery shopping whilst on the move. The application syncs with Tesco’s online shopping portal, which enables customers who are registered with the online store to use their iPhone to create a list of their shopping, and book deliveries for their order.
