“We’re extremely sorry on this occasion we did not meet our own extremely high standards.”

Asda Rolls Out Tech Trade In Scheme

June 7, 2011 · Filed Under Consumer Electronics, Online Shopping, Shopping News · Comment

UK supermarket chain ASDA has begun a new trade in service for gadgets which lets consumers swap old electronic items for cash.

Consumers can currently trade used mobile phones, MP3 players, sat navs and digital cameras for cash. Larger ticket items such as laptops and gaming consoles will be added to the service in July.

ASDA says its Tech Trade In scheme will be unbeatable on price, and rivals such as Mazuma mobile, Boots, Envirofone, Tesco and Sainsbury’s will not be able to compete.

The prices offered by any of these five Asda rivals will checked at the time the item being considered is added to the Asda site, and under the company’s promise, consumers who can prove that the price they received from Asda was not the highest within 24 hours, will be paid the difference.

Asda rolled out the new service after the retailer conducted research which suggested that in the UK, there are approximately 35 million unwanted and unused second hand mobile phones, 11 million digital cameras, 12 million gaming consoles, 9 million personal computers, and 5.5 million laptops.

Phil Stout, Asda’s electronics service manager, said: “We reckon the average UK home has hundreds of pounds worth of old gadgets that could be traded in for cash.”

“There are more mobile phones in the UK than people, for example, so there is a lot of cash out there waiting to be released.”

Stout added that goods traded in at Asda stores will either be recycled by specialist firms or repaired and resold to help the UK “become greener”.

2011 Set To Be Largest Year of Growth In Asda History

March 29, 2011 · Filed Under ASDA, Shopping News · Comment

After receiving approval by the Office of Fair Trading for its £778 million acquisition of discount retailer Netto, Asda is set to open as many as 168 new stores this year.

As part of the acquisition, as many as 147 Netto stores are being converted to the Asda brand, a process which will take place between May and the end of the year. The conversions will also be complimented by the opening of a further 21 new store openings, making 2011 the biggest single year of growth in Asda’s history.

The store conversions will mean that Asda will add as much as 1.8 million square feet of retail food space in the UK, whilst a further half million square feet will be added through the opening of seven new Asda superstores, four Asda Livings, ten Asda supermarkets and extensions to five existing stores.

The first converted Netto stores will open in the towns of Worksop, Wakefield and Stainforth in May.

Judith McKenna, Chief Financial Officer at Asda, said: “The combination of acquiring 147 Netto stores together with our organic growth plans means we will be able to save customers more money than ever before.”

“We’ll also create 1,500 jobs as we convert all of the Netto stores into Asda supermarkets .”

Campaign Group Urges UK Supermarkets To Restrict Alcohol Displays

March 15, 2011 · Filed Under Shopping News · Comment

UK supermarket chains are being urged by health campaign groups to stop the practice of displaying alcohol besides food and soft drinks.

Alcohol Concern a charity group published research in December which suggests that the big four supermarket chains were “overflowing” with discounted alcohol, with wine and beer displays placed throughout their stores.

The group is now imploring retailers including off licences to make sure alcohol products are confined to merely one section of the store, an idea which Alcohol Concern claims is supported by over 70 per cent of shoppers.

The group would also like to see England follow the example set by legislators in Scotland and Wales to restrict the places where alcohol can be seen, and recommends the introduction of a 50p per unit minimum to stop the “deep discounting of alcohol by supermarkets “.

Don Shenker, the group’s chief executive, said: “It’s now common practice to sell wine next to ready-meals, pushing the idea that a relaxing meal should be accompanied by an alcoholic drink .”

“Such practices help fuel a drinking culture where one in four people in England are already drinking at levels that are harming their health.”

Andrew Opie, the British Retail Consortium’s food director responded: “Supermarkets are the most responsible sellers of alcohol. There’s no evidence to link the way alcohol is sold currently to irresponsible drinking.”

“Limiting supermarket displays would create inconvenience for the vast majority of customers who enjoy alcohol sensibly”, he added.

Asda Survey Reveals British Deserts Favourite With Shoppers

February 14, 2011 · Filed Under ASDA, Shopping News · Comment

A new survey which was commissioned by supermarket chain Asda has revealed that Apple Crumble is Britain’s favourite dessert, and that traditional British puddings have returned to the top popularity sport after years of foreign desserts topping the rankings.

According to the poll results, 68 per cent of UK grocery shoppers rated apple crumble as their favourite dessert. The survey results also suggests that other British desserts such as bread and butter pudding, spotted dick and sticky toffee pudding have soared in popularity largely at the expense of foreign alternatives such as the crème brulee.

Asda spokeswoman Vickie North said: “The humble apple crumble has found its way back on to the British pudding agenda once again after years of competition from more indulgent puds.”

Celebrity chef Antony Worrall Thompson said: “Puddings and desserts are one thing that we do well in Britain, and we do it better than a lot of other countries whose desserts have far too much sugar and gelatine in.”

He added that apple crumble was not only tasty, but also easy to prepare and versatile.

Advertising Watchdog Compels Asda To Modify Price Guarantee Advertising

February 7, 2011 · Filed Under Shopping News · Comment

The Advertising Standards Authority has ordered UK retailing giant Asda to change its price guarantee adverts following complaints from rival supermarket chains who claim it is “misleading”

Asda’s price guarantee is an advertisement which promises to refund customers any difference in price should they find their groceries cheaper at other supermarket chains.

Tesco and Morrisons complains to the ASA that the campaign was misleading, since it suggests that Asda was in general, cheaper than its rivals.

Asda mounted a strong defence to the charge, and has insisted that the methodology it uses to compare its prices with those of other retailers was both robust and accurate, and also supported by Clearcast, which approves ads before they go on TV.

Despite the approval, the ASA either fully or partially upheld four of the nine complaints against Asda, and ruled that the retailer failed to make clear that its price guarantee was not applicable to non grocery items which were display prominently in its advertising.

A statement from the advertising watchdog said: “We told Asda to ensure their ads did not suggest their price guarantee applied to all items, including non-grocery items and items that were specifically excluded, or that their savings claims referred to shopping generally rather than specific items, if that was not the case.”

Asda said it was satisfied with the outcome and remains committed to the Asda Price Guarantee and its recently launched 10 per cent cheaper price promise.
