Asda Introduces Common Sense Pricing For Spectacles

UK retailer Asda has committed to new common sense pricing, which will help its customers save cash on spectacles. Asda Optician customers will be able to purchase any prescription single vision set of spectacles for £50 for standard frames and £70 for designer frames, with no hidden extras.
Contrastingly high street opticians usually attract customers with the promise of good deals, with customers more often than not having to shell out for costly add ons such as scratch proof and thinner lenses or anti reflective coatings.
The new policy of clear and simple pricing is in response to new research from Asda showing that almost 45 per cent of spectacle wearers cite cost as the biggest reason for not updating their prescription, with the average person paying £150 for their specs.
42 per cent of the study’s respondents believe that fair price for glasses was above £100 and will be shocked at the deal available across all 84 Asda optician locations, with 630 frames to choose from.
Nik Langrish-Dixon, head of optical at Asda said: “Whilst other retailers’ headline prices may sound good in theory, the reality is that nearly 85 per cent of their customers don’t get their glasses at this price and end up paying way more. You could go in expecting to pay £25 for a pair of glasses but, depending on your prescription, could easily end up shelling out over £200.”
“We are offering customers a guiding light by offering a flat price for a pair of specs no matter what their prescription – no hidden extras, no nasty surprises.”
Asda in an industry first is offering ant-reflective coating on all glasses purchased from in-store opticians, for which market leader, SpecSavers charge an extra £30. This follows the move by Asda in 2007 to provide anti-scratch coating as standard.
In addition to the £50 glasses, Asda will also be offering glasses with designer frames for just £70, and two pairs of standard or designer glasses for £90.

i have recently seen your advert stating you can buy 2 pairs of glassesfor £90 so my partner and i both had an eye test at asda because of this offer. we each chose frames and when we tried to purchase them, we were told the offer was for one prescription only and we couldnt have one pair each for £90. I challenged this with the store manager as i feel the advertising is misleading and misrepresentation of the offer. nowhere does the ad state the offer is per prescription. i will seek further advise from trading
standards and other organisations but would welcome an explanation from someone from asda.
You can take the issue up with the help in the link below, and see what the response is, I am sure they will be helpful, but the easy option really would be go to the store at separate times, and fill both your prescriptions separately. If you are trying to buy two prescriptions for the price of one, in fairness the offer is aimed at people who are looking to have a spare set of spectacles made. I don’t think the intention of the advertising it to promote two prescriptions for the price of one.

No opticians offer in the land would give you that offer based on 2 separate prescriptions. I’ve just ordered 2 pairs of designer glasses with ultra thin lenses for £90 what a bargain. My prescription is -8.75 and -9.75 & I have paid well over £200 per pair from Specsavers. I remember fretting over whether I could afford glasses. Thanks to Asda I can now have fashionable glasses & don’t have to worry about not being able to afford to update them. Believe me when your prescription is as bad as mine & you have to wear glasses from the minute you get up to the minute you go to bed you are sooo glad of offers like this.
Sharon get real, which part of the advertising was misleading. Why did you not ask before you had the eye test? Are you learning impaired?
It’s unbelievable what some people complain about. I have never seen this offer relating to 2 seperate pairs ever. Some people really try it on. The offer is good enough without trying to fleece the store too. I hope Asda refuse to fill your prescriptions and you end up paying extortionate prices eleswhere.
its greative just ordered 2 pairs recently ive spent up to £300 as i have a strong prescription, all other retailers should follow suit as ‘why can asda do it’ ive spent thousands over the years on thin lenses, as glassesa are a fashion accessory as a wearer of glasses all the time i like to keep up with the trend, asda will be opticians permanently if they keep up these deals.
