Asda Unveils New Initiatives Aimed At Rebuilding Consumer Trust

UK retailing giant Asda has announced the introduction of three ‘revolutionary’ measures which are targeted at making its business more transparent and enabling its customers to have more say in the way its stores are run. ‘Chosen By You’, the retailers first initiative, will give 18,000 regular Asda customers the ability to purchase products before they are put on sale.

The measure will allow certain customers to test sample products of new ranges, and give them the decision on which new products should be carried by the store. Customers will also have a say in the development of the product and its packaging.

‘Your Asda’, the second initiative the retailer is launching, revolves around an online blog called ‘Aisle Spy’, giving consumers the ability to monitor processing plants as well as the Asda head office during working hours via webcam.

‘Bright Ideas’, the third scheme to be launched by the chain involves Asda offering £100,000 to anyone who can come up with an idea that will save the retailer £2 million.

Andy Bond, Asda UK chief executive, said that the new measures are aimed at rebuilding trust with the company’s customers at a time when confidence in businesses and politicians is at an all time low.

“Customers want to be informed, they want to know how products are sourced and we want customers to know they can trust us. From today there is no ‘behind the scenes’ at Asda. Our aim is to be a truly open, accessible and transparent business so that we can rebuild trust and drive customer loyalty.” Mr. Bond said.

Mr. Bond added that rebuilding consumer confidence was a better way to secure customer loyalty than customer reward schemes offered by Asda’s major rivals.
