Asda Begins Selling Bollywood DVD’s
UK retail giant Asda with become the first British supermarket chain to begin selling Bollywood film titles at its stores.
Asda started selling classic Bollywood movies at its stores nationwide last Saturday, with titles costing as little as £2.
Old classics, such as Sholay, an action flick from the seventies, and perhaps the most successful Bollywood film of all time costs just £5 and is available side by side with modern hits such as Heroes which costs £7.
Asda says the move to start stocking Bollywod DVD’s was in response to growing consumer demand, with films such as Slumdog Millionaire and Bend it Like Bekham helping to widen the appeal of Indian cinema in Britain.
Asda spokeswoman Noor Ali said: “Bollywood cinema is growing in popularity and is now enjoyed all over the world.”
“Now all our customers can have the ultimate Indian night in with a meal from one of our curry counters, Bombay mix and sweets.”
Bollywood, which is a moniker for the Indian film industry producing films from Mumbai is estimated to be worth roughly £22.3 billion and is perhaps the single most prolific film producer, making over 800 movies every year.
