Tesco To Launch Couture Clothing Range
Terry Green, chief executive of the UK’s largest retailer’s clothing unit Tesco Clothing, says the company is planning on launching a couture range of clothing on the retailer’s online store.
The range, which will be known as the F&F Couture online range of clothing, is the first move ever by a supermarket chain into high fashion retail, and will be launched with 16 items to begin with, that will sell for between £40 and £140.
Mr Green lauded the move as a new era for supermarket fashion, claiming the range offers a combination of high quality and affordable clothing.
Last week Mr. Green revealed that he will be stepping down as chief executive of Tesco clothing, after more than five years at the helm. His tenure as CEO was extremely successful with sales at the unit increasing from £700 million to more than £1 billion, and market share having risen from 7 per cent to 9 per cent during the time period.
Mr. Green’s previous position was chief executive of department store Debenhams.
Competition between supermarkets for clothing sales has become increasingly competitive of late, with the most recent set of blows being traded by Asda and Marks And Spencer over returns policies.
George At Asda Unveils Incredibly Generous Returns Policy
The UK’s second largest supermarket chain Asda is seeking to profit at the expense of rivals such as Marks & Spencer who have become increasingly tighter with their returns policy, and has chosen instead to offer an extremely generous returns policy of its own.
Asda, one of the UK’s largest clothing retailers, has unveiled a permanent 100 days no questions asked quality guarantee on all of its clothing items.
Asda has sought to hit back at the rise of disposable fashion, and through its returns policy enables customers to receive a full refund on the products, regardless of how many times the product has been washed and worn.
Fiona Lambert, brand director for George at Asda says the new policy is not merely aimed at advertising the quality of the products Asda retails, but also seeks to attract more customers to Asda stores across Britain.
The returns policy was first trialled with school uniforms last year, and Asda claims that on £9 million in sales, only £900 worth of goods were returned.
The returns policy is designed to win over Marks And Spencer customers angry that the retailer has cut back its returns policy twice in the last four years.
Marks And Spencer has reduced the maximum time period for returns from 90 days to 35 days, but insists the change will not affect the majority of its customers, who it says returns items fairly promptly anyway.

Asda To Launch Affordable Essential Wedding Product Range
Asda has announced that it intends to launch an affordable wedding product range, which will be targeted at those couples who need to budget for their wedding ceremony.
Asda says it will begin offering the range from May, and soon to be brides, will be able to buy strapless floor length wedding gowns made from either satin or ivory chiffon for just £60.
Soon to be bride-grooms will not be left out either, with the retail giant saying that the men will be able to pick out a suit, shirt and tie for just £46.
The bargain wedding collection will also include bridesmaid dresses starting from just £28 and flower bouquets for under £50 and was designed by a specialist team.
The retailer says that the range will enable couples to plan for essential items for their wedding for less than £1,000, and is in response to research which suggests that wedding costs were the biggest worry amongst soon to be brides in Britain.
A spokeswoman for Asda said the company is “proud to be launching the UK’s most affordable wedding collection” and added that it is anticipating strong demand for the new range as it will go on sale just in time for the peak wedding season.

Asda Launches First Ever Mid-Sized Jeans
George at Asda has launched a range of jeans which are available in mid sizes 11,13 and 15. The move is in response to the results of a survey which shows that the average size of a British woman is 15 and not 16 as previously thought.
The study surveyed over 10,000 British women and suggests that 62 per cent consider themselves to be an ‘in-between size’ as opposed to the traditional sizes of 8, 10 or 12.
Fiona Lambert, brand director at George says: “One of the most common complaints from our customers is that they are in between sizes – this is back up by our extensive research. We all know there is nothing more unflattering than a pair of jeans that are too tight or loose. We aim to solve this dilemma with our mid-sized jeans – giving George customers great fitting jeans at a great price.”
Asda also found that 42 per cent of the survey’s respondents have between £20 to £49 to spend on jeans a year, with 20 per cent of the country having £19 or less.
