Asda Reverts Back To Imperial Measurement System In Strawberry Trial

July 1, 2011 · Filed Under Asda Groceries, Food, Shopping News · Comment

Asda has begun to offer its customers punnets of strawberries by the pound and ounce, the first such offering by a supermarket in over 16 years.

The retailer has under trial a 1lb punnet of strawberries offer, which displays both the metric and imperial measurement on the package, as it seeks to respond to growing demand by customers who also want to know the imperial measurement.

According to research from ASDA Grocery Online, 70 per cent of shoppers found the metric system confusing, and preferred product information to be labelled in pounds.

Research by the retailer found that 70 per cent of its shoppers were confused by the metric system and would prefer products to be labelled in pounds.

strawberry buyer Andy Jackson said: “Customers had been badgering us to sell our fruit in pounds and ounces.”

“No one wants to order a litre of beer in the pub, so why do we have to buy 453.39g of strawberries?”

If the strawberry trial proves to be successful, then  says it will consider the roll out of imperial measurements on other fruit and vegetables.

By law, the fruit and vegetable packaging must display metric measurements, however imperial measurements can also be included as “supplementary indication” following a change to EU legislation on weights and measures in 2007.

Asda Cheapest Christmas Supermarket For Second Consecutive Year

January 11, 2011 · Filed Under Asda Groceries, Groceries · Comment

Christmas has come and gone and for the second consecutive year, Asda has been named by the Grocer Magazine as the best value supermarket for Christmas.

The magazine publishes an annual “Christmas 33” survey based on a trolley of 33 essential festive items such as turkey and mince pies. According to the results of the survey Asda’s trolley was the lowest price of all the major supermarket chains costing £105.37.

Morrisons came in second, followed by Tesco, Sainsbury and finally Waitrose.

Asda offered the cheapest turkey costing £13 for a medium-size frozen bird, compared to £15 at Morrisons and Tesco, £18 at Sainsbury’s and £22 at Waitrose .

Asda’s own label Christmas pudding was also the cheapest of the major retailers, costing just £2 less than half the price of its big four rivals

Commenting on the findings, Adam Leyland, editor of The Grocer magazine, said: “Asda is well-known for its cheap prices, and the concern of shoppers last year was the quality of its offer, but it’s putting much more emphasis on quality this year.”

“Asda has pulled out all the stops on the Christmas dinner this year,” he added.

“It wasn’t the cheapest on every item, but it was consistently there or thereabouts. The turkey and the Christmas pudding were particularly keenly priced.”

Sales Growth At British Supermarkets Falls

April 7, 2010 · Filed Under Asda Groceries, Groceries, Morrisons, Sainsbury's, Shopping News, Tesco · Comment

Sales growth at British supermarket chains has slowed to its lowest pace in nearly three years, largely as a result of a sharp drop in food price inflation according to the results of a new survey.

The study conducted by market research firm Kantar Worldpanel suggests that aggregate sales across all British supermarkets grew by 3.6 per cent year on year during the quarter ending March 21st, the slowest growth rate since August 2007.

Kantar Worldpanel says the reason for the slowdown was due to lower food price inflation which fell to 1.8 per cent compared with 9.1 per cent in the same time period during the previous year.

” While lower inflation has had a dampening effect on retailer growth, it also “brings benefits to consumers. The latest figures suggest that shoppers are taking advantage of slower grocery price increases by trading up to more expensive lines such as Tesco Finest,” Kantar Worldpanel ‘s Fraser McKevitt said.

According to the results of the survey, Morrison’s was the strongest performer amongst the Big Four grocery retailers, with sales increasing by 7.8 per cent year on year during the quarter ending March 21st.

Next was Sainsbury’s with sales rising by 4.6 per cent, followed by Tesco (4.1 per cent) and Asda (2.7 per cent).
